My Hormonology

You’ve probably heard this advice before–if you’re ever on an airplane and the oxygen masks drop, you need to put on your mask first before you can help others put on theirs.

That’s because the people who depend on you need you to be at your best before you can help them.

Well, I was recently reminded of this advice earlier this summer when, after months of running at top speed working on multiple major Hormonology projects at once while also helping friends and family with their own important projects (including job applications, grad school admissions and mentoring), I suddenly hit an unexpected stumbling block that stopped me in my tracks.

Had I not been already burned-out and pushed to my limit, this new problem would have been easier to deal with and overcome.

But, instead of putting my oxygen mask on first–making time to restore and replenish my energy with regular breaks and days off–I was busy spending all my time and energy on everyone and everything else around me, leaving me depleted once I needed those resources for myself.

As a result, the new problem was more challenging to deal with than it should have been, which caused a mountain of stress, delayed my work schedule and made it more difficult to help friends and family who were relying on me.

It was an important lesson to be reminded of. So, when psychologist Mary Pritchard invited me to share tips about how you can use the hormonal effects in your cycle to help replenish yourself in her online Well-Nourished Goddess Summit, I leapt the at the opportunity.

Because not only do we all need to be reminded of how important self-care is, we can actually use the hormonal effects in our monthly cycle to get the best self-care we need.
