Weekend Hormone Horoscope: November 10 & 11, 2012

My Hormonology

Which week are you on
in your monthly cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your weekend has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen and testosterone rise
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Once you get past the aches, pains and energy drop from menstruation, you’re likely going to look for ways to be among other people. for instance, by going to a farmer’s market, cafe or mall or by calling up a few buds and just hanging out. Why? As estrogen and testosterone rise throughout your Week 1 and Week 2, they make you enjoy being around others!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Careful when making decisions this weekend, such as whether or not to take back an ex, accept an offer from a friend to go into business together or book a trip that’s way, way, way out of your price range: Peaking estrogen and testosterone are boosting brain chemicals that make you overly optimistic. As a result, you’re likely to focus on the positives while ignoring the (sometimes blindingly obvious) negatives.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then rise again
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’re heading to a restaurant or going to the supermarket for ingredients for meals and you’re trying to cut calories or stick to healthier fare, here’s a tip: Decide what you’ll eat beforehand. If you don’t, you may (okay, will) be tempted to choose the fattiest, sweetest, saltiest, unhealthiest food you see due to rising progesterone, which triggers cravings for high-calorie foods, weakening your willpower to resist. By deciding what you’ll be ordering or preparing beforehand, you bolster your willpower, making progesterone less likely to win the food battle.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone plunge
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Have backup plans ready just in case. For instance, if you’re headed to a cafe for free wi-fi, think of a second spot you can go if there aren’t any seats available. If you’re headed to a store for a certain item, think of a second store that might also carry it. The reason? Plunging estrogen and testosterone are making you more easily irked when your plans hit an unexpected snag. By having a second choice, you’ll avoid the frustration and annoyance these downward-spiraling hormones can bring.
