My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: As your estrogen climbs throughout your Week 1, pumping up your mental and physical energy, chances are, you’re going to get the urge to juggle multiple tasks at once–say, researching a project while returning phone calls or writing a report while doing the laundry. The good news? Research shows that some multitasking can actually help you power through a project faster by breaking up the boring, tedious parts and giving your brain a short, rejuvenating time-out.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: You may feel luckier this weekend, prompting you to buy a lottery ticket, play a high-stakes game or take another risk. That’s high estrogen and testosterone’s influence. As these hormone rise toward their peaks in Week 2, they boost brain chemicals that make you feel more optimistic than any other week of your cycle, which makes you convinced that winning is inevitable. Or at least far more likely.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: This weekend, keep in mind that rising progesterone is already slowing you down since it’s a hormone that has a tiring effect. So, doing other fatiguing activities–say, drinking alcohol, biking a dozen miles or running a million errands–is likely to have an even more exhausting impact on you.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Week 4 can be like a magnifying glass aimed straight at the worst aspect of your life, be it a recent break-up, health problem or job woe, making it seem worse than it actually may be. In fact, issues you may think you were totally over could come back to haunt you as plunging estrogen makes you more prone to dwelling on the negatives. My advice? Try to swap negative thoughts with positive ones–like the feeling of success you experienced from the half-marathon you recently ran, the fun you had with a pal at a baseball game or the last time you hugged someone you love. This counter-attack of positivity can help prevent you from falling into a downward spiral so you can enjoy a happier premenstrual day.
