My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your weekend has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen and testosterone rise
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: You may nibble food when you’re not hungry, shop when you don’t need anything or cut your bangs even if they don’t need a trim. That’s because rising estrogen makes you a bit restless–so if you’re not actively engaged in a project, you’ll find something to keep you busy.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Treat your senses to something wonderful, for instance, order a dish with complex flavors, take a moment to sniff the roses in the flower department at the supermarket or rub a fuzzy belly on a pet. High estrogen is sharpening all your senses, making you appreciate subtle tastes, smells, textures and more!

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then rise again
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: You may notice you have a bit less confidence than you did during the first half of your cycle, for instance, you may not trust yourself to make the right decision on an issue, you may avoid walking into a packed restaurant because you don’t feel like you’re dressed nicely enough or you may not pipe up in a meeting because you’re not sure your idea is good enough to share. Why? Estrogen and testosterone dip this week, reducing your brain’s level of chemicals responsible for bolstering self-esteem. My advice? Next time you have a drop in confidence, think about good deeds you’ve done or qualities you love about yourself. Recent research shows this simple technique ratchets up self-worth in mere minutes by reminding yourself of why you’re so awesome!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone plunge
This weekend’s Hormone Horoscope: Whatever the weather is like, you may feel too hot, too cold, too sticky or too dry. What’s behind your discomfort? Plunging estrogen! As it plummets, it makes you more sensitive to your physical environment.
