Which week are you on
in your monthly cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your day has in store:
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen and testosterone rise
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: I often say to myself that there’s a “Morning Gab” and a “Night Gab” and Morning Gab is always starting projects that she leaves for Night Gab tasks to finish, even when Night Gab is always too tired to finish them and then always leaves them for Morning Gab to do the next day (you can see why I get so little done!). Well, there’s a similar pattern going on with your cycle. The “First Half of Your Cycle You” may be tempted to start long projects that she expects “Second Half of Your Cycle You” to finish, totally ignoring the fact that Second Half of Your Cycle You is usually bone-tired from rising progesterone and lower levels of estrogen and testosterone to actually finish them. My point with all this crazy talk? Avoid piling too many long-term projects on your to-do list during the first two weeks of your cycle or make sure they’re done by the end of Week 2 since you may not have the oomph to power through them once Week 3 rolls around.
Day 8 to Day 13
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: High estrogen is triggering more upbeat moments in your day. As a result, you may be inspired to do a random act of kindness for a friend, neighbor or even a perfect stranger. And, while you may not expect a reward for your good deed, turns out, you might get one—but not necessarily from the person you helped. A recent study out of Harvard and the University of California, San Diego, shows that one act of kindness you do for someone else prompts them to do an act of kindness for three people around them, and those three people do an act of kindness for three people around them, resulting in a chain reaction that makes dozens of people within your social circle, neighborhood, school and/or workplace become more generous and giving!
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then rise again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Week 3 is so the opposite of Week 2 that people (or even you) may think you’ve undergone a personality change. It’s just your hormones! After two wonderful weeks of estrogen and testosterone rising, these hormones now dip, taking away the energy, great mood and patience you had and replacing it with fatigue, a bit of the blues and irritability. Plus, you’ve got rising progesterone to contend with now. This hormone puts a damper on your libido and saps your pep. While there’s not much you can do about it (well, until menopause), at the very least knowing you’re perfectly normal and most other cycling women are experiencing the same exact mood shifts may be some sort of solace.
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your libido gets revved up today as nerve endings down below get stimulated while your body prepares for menstruation. If you plan to head to bed (or a hotel or back seat of a car or public restroom—who am I to judge?), keep in mind two important hormonal hurdles facing your sex life today: while you may feel aroused, plunging estrogen is making it harder for your body to produce lubrication, so have a bottle of lubricant handy to avoid uncomfortable chafing; plunging estrogen is also making it harder to focus, so you’ll have to try harder to blot out work problems, your grocery list and that juicy piece of gossip you heard earlier that day. But, if get over both of those challenges, you should be enjoying a fun romp that helps boost mood and chase away premenstrual grumpies.
