Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Okay, so your Week 1 probably gets off to a slow start if you get aches, pains and fatigue from your period. But, by the middle of this week, rising estrogen eclipses period problems and has you sleeping better, it’s pumping up your energy and it’s improving your outlook. As a result, you get a second wind about starting (or re-starting) projects, feel optimistic about overcoming problems and are ready to take on all-new challenges.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You could get hit with a sudden bout of euphoria today. Oh, you may give credit to the amazing weather, the awe-inspiring sight of a sky full of twinkling stars or a bit of good news you hear. But, the likely true reason behind your surge of inner sunshine goes to rising estrogen, which is prompting your brain to churn out a higher level of feel-good chemicals that rev your mood and stir your excitement.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find your brain goes on auto-pilot more often today. In fact, you may go through several acts–for instance, making coffee, eating breakfast and washing up–without even realizing you’re doing it till you’re done. You can point the blame for your brain fog squarely on progesterone. As this sedating hormone rises throughout your Week 3, it’s sapping your mental energy. Need to be super-alert for an important meeting or event? No problem! Just go for a quick 10-minute walk or eat a little dark chocolate. Studies show that exercise and certain compounds in dark chocolate both send a surge of energizing blood to the brain, making you feel more awake and focused in minutes.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Expect to have a few flubs today. For instance, you’ll probably click the wrong button on your computer, use the wrong setting on the washing machine or call someone by the wrong name. Blame goes to plunging estrogen, which makes you a tad clumsy and forgetful. Unfortunately, this same descending hormone is also prone to making you get reeeallly irritated when you mess up since it lowers levels of brain chemicals that help you stay patient. Luckily, by simply anticipating that you’ll likely do something wrong at some point today, you’ll hopefully lower the bar a little and, therefore, avoid beating yourself up over a minor mistake.
