Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Week 1 is a really a two-parter: Even though lovely energy-boosting, mood-lifting, brain-sharpening estrogen rises throughout this entire week, during the first two or three days, you may not feel much of estrogen’s beneficial effects. That’s because the level of this hormone is still quite low, plus you’ve got fatiguing, achy menstruation to deal with. As a result, from Day 1 to Day 3, you may feel foggy, a little cranky and/or tired. Luckily for most women, the second half of your Week 1 is a totally different story. By Day 4, estrogen will have risen to a point that makes you sharper, upbeat and energized. So, if you’re in the first half of your Week 1 today, try to boost your mood, brain skills and energy by eating iron-rich foods or taking an 18 mg. iron supplement, making time for a fun, relaxing activity (such as going for a walk or watching your favorite TV show), and remind yourself that good times are right around the corner. And if you’re in the second half of your Week 1 today, make the most of it! Call up pals, sign up for a class, buy tickets to something amazing. But, whatever you do, don’t let this rising hormone phase pass by without doing something worth bragging about!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your desire to be around others peaks in Week 2 of your cycle thanks to high estrogen, which pushes you to be extroverted and social. So, if you’ve got periods where you’re alone today, you may seek out ways to be nearer to others, for instance, bringing your work to a coffee shop, going shopping at a busy mall or asking friends to join you for dinner.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Unlike Week 2 gals, your desire for alone-time increases as your Week 3 goes on thanks to lower levels of estrogen combined with sedating progesterone that make you a bit more introverted and quiet. As a result, you may go out of your way to avoid crowds and people, for instance, by working at home, shopping at off-hours or declining invitations to join others for social events.  

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Coordination and dexterity are not going to be your closest allies today. That’s because plunging estrogen is prompting brain changes that make you a bit clumsier, more likely to misjudge distances or push you off balance. So, if you’re going square dancing, practicing your fire baton twirling or packing your grandma’s china dishes today, I’d recommend taking extra safety precautions.
