Which week are you on in your cycle?
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: It’s easier than it’s been in the past week to overlook someone else’s faults. Your renewed patience comes courtesy of estrogen. As this hormone rises, which it does today, it boosts the feel-good brain chemical serotonin—and this makes you feel more optimistic, upbeat and forgiving.
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: Even if you’re attracted to nerdy, self-effacing, intellectual types during other weeks of your cycle, you’ll likely feel a pull toward masculine, confident, macho hunks today. That’s rising estrogen’s doing. When it gets as high as it does this week, it pushes you toward more robust, powerful and healthy mates.
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: You’re beginning to have doubts regarding something you were sure about just last week. This is due to a lower level of estrogen, which takes away the confidence you had during the first two weeks of your cycle, as well as rising progesterone, which urges you to play it safe. Luckily, you can use this “reality check” phase of your cycle to your advantage by making sure you’re headed in the directions you really want to go and aren’t just trying to overlook warning signs that it’s time to change plans.
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: This is so not the week to break in new shoes, go for a bikini wax, schedule a dentist appointment or do anything else that involves pain. Plunging estrogen is bringing down your body’s level of pain-masking endorphins, which makes the usual ouch-inducers even more uncomfortable.
