My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: You’re in a gift-giving mood as rising estrogen and testosterone combine a desire to shop with a desire to build strong bonds with others. On a budget? Great news! A new Stanford University study shows that most folks prefer small gifts that have more meaning—like a bouquet of their favorite flowers or a picture frame with a photo of you and your pal in it—than an iPod, jewelry and other pricey pressies.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: You’ll hear me often recommending that you take advantage of Week 2’s high hormone brain skills, verbal eloquence, energy and confidence to try things you normally wouldn’t during lower hormone days, like asking your boss for flex-time, applying for a loan to start a small business or asking the hunky accountant for his number. However, there is one downside to doing high-flying acts on high estrogen days: you may stress out about it. That’s because estrogen intensifies and prolongs your body’s natural stress response. You can thwart it with deep, slow breathing, visualizing a calm place or listening to soothing music. But, even if you can’t tamp down the anxiety completely, try going through with your plans, anyway. Once you’ve accomplished them (and gotten what you want!), the stress will melt away and you’ll have lots to brag about to your friends.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: It may be harder to pick a color for the new couch, decide on a restaurant for lunch or help a friend choose between two date outfits. That’s because rising progesterone is giving you a case of the blahs, which makes it harder to get inspired or muster enthusiasm about not-so-important matters.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: The latest premenstrual happiness booster? Plan a trip! Even if it’s just a weekend staycation, a new study in the journal Applied Research in Quality of Life reveals that looking forward to getting away makes us happier all the way up to day we leave!
