That’s because estrogen and testosterone are on the downswing–taking away your derring-do–while progesterone is rising–and this is a hormone that urges you to be cautious in case you got pregnant during ovulation at the end of Week 2.
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Plunging estrogen is putting your energy on the low side today. However, because sedating progesterone is also plunging, you may feel like your energy level is actually higher than it was last week. Oh, you’re not at Week 2 peaking-pep levels. But, that progesterone fog you walked around in will be fading. And here’s another thing about your energy level in Week 4: You may get sudden power surges out of the blue that you experience as bouts of antsiness, anxiety or even euphoria. Here’s why: As estrogen descends, it brings down levels of the mood-regulating brain chemical serotonin. When serotonin goes down, another brain chemical, noradrenaline, goes up. (They work together like a see-saw.) Noradrenaline gives you that heart-thumping feeling that’s triggered by sudden unexpected events, like slamming on your car brakes because a dog runs out in front of you. Well, this noradrenaline surge can manifest itself in a negative way (for instance, as anxiety) or a positive way (like a sudden case of the giggles). Either way it happens, rest assured, it typically passes in a few minutes and you’ll return to your usual descending estrogen energy level once again.
