My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: If you still have your period today, then you’re better at gauging someone’s emotions today thanks to oxytocin, a hormone that rises during menstruation. German researchers recently discovered that higher levels of this hormone make people more attuned to the feelings of others.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Be careful of all those caffeinated lattes and whatever-cinos you use to jump-start your day. A rise in estrogen and testosterone is already turbo-charging your energy. Overdo it with the java and the combo of caffeine and high hormones could lead to a heart-pounding case of the jitters.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: It’s not your imagination—today you really do feel like buying items that use babies, puppies and kittens to sell them. That’s progesterone’s influence. Research shows that as this hormone rises, it intensifies your attraction to cuddly-wuddly shapes. PS: This may be news to you, but  marketing execs have known about this for years.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Plunging estrogen brings down the feel-good brain chemical serotonin. As a result, it’s easier to get sucked into a negative mood today. And, it’s even easier when you hang around negative people, according to a Indiana University researchers who discovered that negativity is contagious. In their study, even people who had a positive view about something adopted a more negative one when someone voiced their bad opinion of it.
