Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: You’ll notice that your memory gets sharper, you’re thinking faster on your feet and you’re more eloquent as the days go by this week. You can thank rising estrogen and testosterone for the boost in brain and verbal skills. As they climb they improve your cognitive and speech abilities.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: Resist the urge to take on more than you can chew today. High estrogen and testosterone are giving you the kind of oomph that makes you feel like you can tackle a million things at once and the optimism that the day is hours longer than it really is.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: In the previous two weeks, rising testosterone made you comfortable leading a project or going it alone. This week, testosterone dips—which makes the desire to work independently dip with it—and progesterone rises—which has you more comfortable working alongside others as part of a team.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle

Luckily, you can beat estrogen at its own game by boosting serotonin right back up. And the method is totally yummy: simply gobble carbs! Healthy complex carbohydrates—like whole grain bread, oatmeal and even popcorn—lift your brain’s serotonin level shortly after eating them.
