Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: As estrogen and testosterone rise, they boost brain chemicals that make you feel more confident about your work, school, kids, home, gorgeous hair, whatever you like most about your life. And, according to a new study, these prideful feelings affect your shopping habits, making you gravitate toward beautiful shoes, clothes, jewelry and other items that make you stand out in a crowd, reports the Journal of Consumer Research.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: Week 2 talkativeness reminds me of a woman I knew in college who had no filters—she would say anything that came into her head. This included brutally honest opinions and jokes that, while funny, pushed the envelope of politeness. I bring this up because during Week 2, high estrogen and testosterone are loosening your lips and making you say (or post) things on the fly that other folks might find a tad offensive.  

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: You’ll likely choose less risky options today as rising progesterone and lower estrogen make you more concerned about safety and money. For instance, you may slow down a bit while driving, turn down an investment offer or sign up for a book group over a sky-diving adventure.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: Cut yourself some slack today. Plunging estrogen is making you more self-critical. As a result, you may get annoyed at something you said or did, or because your hair didn’t come out just right. Make yourself feel better by acknowledging that descending hormones are making you more sensitive to your own mistakes. Then remember that we all make them, too, even on our best days.
