My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: Rising estrogen has you feeling chattier and more outgoing, so you’re in the mood to share what you know–whether it’s by leaving reviews on a website about a product, raving about a movie to a pal or giving unsolicited advice to anyone within a five-foot radius.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: According to a recent study out of Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, you may make a risky choice regarding your career today–such as quitting a job suddenly, applying for a job that’s totally different from what you usually do, accepting a job that has high stakes attached to it (such as trading stocks or doing high-wire acrobatics) or starting your own business. According to the researchers, it’s because high testosterone is amping up your competitiveness, ambition and derring-do, which makes you more likely to move out of your comfort zone and do something totally different.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: If sedating progesterone is making it hard for you to rev your engines this week, try this easy energizing trick: Place a vase of colorful flowers by your bedside or in the kitchen. Folks who did this in a recent study reported feeling an instant surge in pep and happiness that lasted all day long. Researchers say our brain is naturally wired to awaken at the sight of beautiful bouquets since our ancestors took it as a sign that fruit or other food-bearing plants were nearby.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: You may feel frustrated today as problems you’ve swept under the rug during the first three weeks of your cycle rear their ugly heads like nobody’s business. You can either blame or thank plunging estrogen for highlighting your woes. As this hormone plunges, it reduces feel-good serotonin in your brain. And while this makes you more agitated about problems, thing is, it’s probably about time you addressed them, anyway. After all, if you stayed mum all cycle long and never tackled issues head-on, then your roommate would never be told to finally pay her rent on time, your sweetheart would never find out how much you hate his “Magic Meatloaf” dish he keeps surprising you with and your coworker would never learn that you actually don’t enjoy doing his work for him.
