Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: As estrogen and testosterone rise this week and all next week, your urge to shop is amplified. As a result, when you go to Target, the supermarket or the mall for one item, you may end up coming home with a cart-full. If you’re on a budget, avoid getting a cart or even a basket, and limit yourself to only what you can carry. And, if you’re a competitive female weight lifter, bring along a much weaker pal and limit yourself to whatever she can haul.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: As confidence-boosting estrogen and testosterone hit their highs, this is the week when you know you can do better—that you’re smarter, funnier, more loving, more giving and/or more talented than you’ve been given credit for. As a result, you may want to make dramatic changes to get the credit you deserve, for instance, by looking for a new job, finding a different partner or confronting the people in your life who aren’t giving you your due.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: Be prepared to make a few goofs today, for instance, putting your car keys in the fridge, calling up someone you meant to text or hitting “send” on an email before you were finished writing it. Rising progesterone is making you feel sleepy, which can put you on auto-pilot.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: Feeling grumpy? It may not be due directly to PMS, but to the aches and pains that are worsened as estrogen descends today. Try popping  a pain pill, putting on a heat patch, applying a bag of frozen peas to whatever’s throbbing or doing anything else to relieve the discomfort and you may be surprised by how much happier you feel.
