My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: You may find yourself procrastinating today, for instance, putting off paying your bills, working on an important project or setting up an appointment. The reason? Rising estrogen is making you feel optimistic, which gives you the false sense that you’ll eventually get to these important tasks before their due date.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: With estrogen and testosterone peaking, your energy level is at an all-cycle high. So, be careful when chugging caffeinated drinks and watching edge-of-your-seat thrillers. You may end up getting the jitters or triggering nervous habits, like nail biting or jaw clenching.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: If it’s the first half of your Week 3, you may feel a bit down or irritable. This is due to “pre-PMS”, which is like PMS where feel-good brain chemicals dip as estrogen declines. Thankfully, by the middle of Week 3, estrogen rises again along with sedating progesterone, giving you a calm, mellow mood.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: You’re in the mood to get your way today as plunging estrogen lowers feel-good serotonin in your brain, making you a tad less patient and willing to compromise. Luckily, Italian researchers discovered a novel way to get people to do things your way: ask them for what you want in their right ear! In their study, volunteers who asked strangers for a favor were far more likely to get it when the request was made in their right ear than their left. The reason? Most verbal processing and logical thinking is done in the left side of the brain, which is accessed through the right ear, and this makes people more likely to act on what’s being heard in it.
