Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: A project you’ve been working on seems a little easier to tackle today as rising estrogen boosts your energy and optimism. It’s also making it easier to laugh at the problems that have been blocking your progress, like the chatty co-worker or tuggy kid who insists on interrupting you just as you’re getting started. Okay, maybe you won’t laugh. But you will feel less like driving them to the desert and leaving them there.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: Rising estrogen is supposed to be making you feel super-happy today. However, this high hormone is also making you more prone to major stress-outs. The result? If you’ve got something today that makes you worried—say, a job interview or test—it could turn into a tummy-churning stress-out of epic proportions. Some good news? Stress relievers—like deep breathing, visualization and, thank goodness, even retail therapy—can help quash a stress-out before it gets out of hand and get you back to the happy mood your estrogen has in store.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: Pull out some old CDs or rewatch a favorite movie. Rising progesterone is making you a tad sentimental, so you’ll get a special kick out of reminiscing about the first time you experienced them.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: Descending estrogen makes it harder to catch some quality zzz’s tonight. To help you get a better snooze, try eating grapes. A recent Italian study found that the sweet fruit contains small amounts of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep.
