Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Friday, May 14, 2010

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: This weekend, take time to get the ball rolling on a project you’ve been putting off. Rising estrogen and testosterone give you the oomph you need to take the first step. And they continue to rise all this week and all of Week 2 of your cycle, which helps keep your momentum going.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Hunt down that one item that’s been eluding you—the perfect paint color for your bedroom, the pillows that would match your couch perfectly, the blouse that would go great with your favorite skirt, the shoes you need for an upcoming event. Whatever it is you’ve been looking for, high estrogen and testosterone will make it easier to find today as they sharpen your senses, make you more alert and pump up your thrill for adventure, which makes traveling far and wide far in your search more enjoyable than during any other week of your cycle.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: You’ll get a sense of satisfaction when bundling up all your dirty laundry and finally getting all the wash done, scrubbing the bathtub till it’s bubble bath-ready, putting up the new blinds that have been sitting in the box on the floor for a year, quieting the nagging squeak in your front door, putting new photos in photo frames and doing anything else that makes your home neater and a more restful place to be. That’s because, as progesterone rises, it has a sedating effect that makes you less interested in doing exciting activities with others and it brings out your home-loving side, making you want to focus on feathering your nest.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Try filling your weekend with proven mood-boosting activities, like gardening, biking, spending time with good pals, treating yourself to your favorite chocolate glazed doughnut or going for a mani/pedi. Plunging estrogen brings down feel-good brain chemicals and this may or may not trigger a down mood. But, with so many easy, fun ways to ward it off, why even risk it?
