Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Friday, June 11, 2010

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: In the second half of your cycle, plunging estrogen and testosterone put you in a cautious mood that makes you prefer the tried-and-true. Not so with the first half. This week and all next, rising estrogen and testosterone make you more open to trying anything new, such as a hairstyle, restaurant, vacation destination and even sexual position.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: When getting dressed today, you’re likely to be picking out clothes that are more colorful and/or show off your curves. Why? High estrogen and testosterone are giving you a mood boost, which naturally makes you more drawn to bolder colors, and they’re making you feel confident about your body, so you don’t mind revealing a little skin or donning something that’s a little snugger than usual.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Chatting and making small talk with friends, neighbors and coworkers seems like so much of a chore today as rising progesterone makes you feel quiet and subdued. What a difference from the gab-fast last week when high estrogen had you talking up a storm!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You’re probably feeling a tad fatigued from descending estrogen and testosterone today. Well, here’s some good great news: dark chocolate boosts energy! And not for the reason you think. Despite what most people assume, chocolate doesn’t contain a whole lot of caffeine. Instead, this tasty treat gets its pep-boosting effect from phenylethylamine, a chemical that works a lot like an amphetamine to perk you up.
