My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: You may come down with a serious case of cabin fever this week as rising estrogen and testosterone make you more easily bored and are practically pushing you out the door to go hunt down some adventure.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: Research shows that high estrogen gives your brain a bigger dopamine-induced buzz from your usual enjoyments, like chocolate and kissing. However, a study in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences shows this also makes you more likely to get hooked on cigarettes, drugs and other addictive baddies.  Suffice to say, you’re better off saving the Cinnabons till Week 3 when the risk of getting strung out on them decreases.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: Your energy slumps today due to rising progesterone, a hormone with sedating effects. Want an easy way to stay alert all day? Drink less caffeine! You read right—less! Harvard University scientists say that sipping a little caffeinated tea or coffee throughout the day keeps you more alert and energized than downing an oversized mug-full in one gulp. According to their research, small amounts of caffeine spaced out over several hours works better at countering the buildup of adenosine, a brain chemical that causes drowsiness as the day goes on.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: Keep a bottle of moisturizer handy. Plunging estrogen is slowing down your body’s moisture production. Along with dry winter air, you can end up with uncomfortable chapping and cracked, dry skin. For the best skin-saving protection, slather on your favorite lotion within minutes of drying off after a shower or bath to lock in the moisture all day.
