My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You may find that you’re driving a bit faster, the radio is just a smidge (or two or three) louder than in past weeks, you need to convince someone that your method is the best and you’re saying “yes” more often to invitations, inquiries and virtually anything asked. Why? Rising estrogen and testosterone are pumping your brain full of feel-good chemicals, and this makes you a tad more zealous in everything you do.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Guard your heart today. You may be convinced that you’re head-over-heels in love with a first date, an old flame or someone who is not your current partner, resulting in you stalking them on Facebook, riding past their house like a million times and spending hours picturing your future life together. Truth? High estrogen may just be playing mind-games with you and the love you feel may not be as real as you think. The reason? As this hormone peaks, it puts your brain on automatic mate-seeker, pushing you toward someone newer, more exciting and physically attractive. Luckily, there’s a super-easy way to find out if what you’re feeling really is true love or just estrogen lust before you make any drastic moves—simply double-check how you feel about this person in Week 3 of your cycle. If it’s true love, the feelings you have will be just as strong even as estrogen plunges next week. If it’s simple hormone-fueled lust, chances are, your feelings will fade dramatically.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: People who got used to making you laugh for the past two weeks are gonna start to worry that they’ve broken their funny bone when they’re around you. The reason? During Week 1 and Week 2, you were all guffaws as estrogen rose since this hormone boosted laugh-triggering endorphins. But, in Week 3, not only does estrogen dip to a lower level, making the giggles farther and fewer between, rising progesterone is also on the scene, making you seem more serious and sober.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Making a decision will likely be more difficult today as plunging estrogen makes you doubt whether you’re making the right choice. And while that can be annoying for some (the customer behind you at Dunkin Donuts, for example), it’s not such a bad thing when considering big or important decisions that you’re better off pondering a little longer, such as whether to buy a house, move to a new city, get married or try bangs.
