First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Since today is Leap Day, which means one extra day of the year, celebrate the day by fitting in more silliness you enjoyed as a kid, such as singing out loud, skipping, baking cupcakes or playing pranks. Low-but-rising estrogen in Week 1 puts you in the mood to have fun, but because it’s still low, you prefer the kind of familiar fun that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Leap Year celebrants who are commemorating this extra day of the year may want to try to fit in an extra exciting adventure today. High estrogen and testosterone make risk-taking, showing off and being a daredevil so much fun thanks to the buzz of feel-good brain chemicals they prompt when you’re being brave or naughty! So, dare to play hooky today, take a road trip, surprise a pal you haven’t seen in a longtime with an impromptu visit or give the object of your affection a muffin…with your phone number tucked in it!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: A perfect way for Week 3 gals to celebrate Leap Year’s bonus day is by fitting in extra time for yourself to read a favorite book, watch a favorite movie, eat favorite noshes or do anything else you love, but rarely take the time to do. Rising progesterone is making you enjoy mellower pursuits, especially ones that involve food, and it’s making you enjoy alone-time more than any other week of your cycle.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You may be tempted to say “Leap Year Shmeap Year” today as plunging estrogen plays keep-away with your good mood. But, you can make this day better and celebrate Leap Year’s bonus day by fitting in more activities that are proven happiness-lifters, such as doing exercise, treating yourself to a small purchase, making a plan to improve an aspect of your life (like your job or relationship) or simply cutting yourself some slack by promising to not be a perfectionist.
