My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: While the standard thought about your period week is that you’re moody and irritable, truth is, rising estrogen is actually making you feel happier and more optimistic. It’s like an instant cure for PMS, which makes sense since dipping estrogen causes sour moods while rising estrogen triggers good feelings. So, why do you sometimes feel cranky during the first week of your cycle? Most of it comes down to pain and discomfort. Luckily, you can nip that in the bud—for instance, nixing cramps with ginger, a heating pad, chamomile tea or ibuprofen, switching to a more comfortable menstrual product (have you tried the Instead Softcup?) and wearing more comfortable clothes and shoes (low estrogen may be making you a tad more sensitive to pinching attire). Once the pain is gone, chances are you’ll feel brighter instantly.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You may feel it’s time to make the first move in a relationship, at your job or at school. Why? High estrogen and testosterone are bolstering your confidence and desire to get something new started.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope:  You’ll likely be spending less money this week compared to your shopping habits during Week 2. That’s because rising progesterone is making you more cautious about splurging and lower levels of estrogen and testosterone are making you less confident about the amount of money you have to spare.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You may be tempted to think that bad luck is following you around today. Truth? Plunging estrogen and testosterone are simply making you focus on the less-than-stellar moments in your day rather than what’s going right. What’s more, this hormonal plunge is making you a bit short-tempered, so when something aggravating does happen, you’re less likely to take positive steps to fix it or rebound from it and more likely to get irritable, which can worsen the situation.
