Today’s Daily Hormone Horoscope: Wednesday, August 18, 2010

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone-cast: Today’s the day to start making social plans for the weekend. As estrogen and testosterone continue to climb this week, they’re going to be pushing you out of the door and making you want to go to parties, dance clubs, mini vacations with your buds, you name it. And you definitely don’t want to be left with nothing scheduled for these restless hormones once the weekend arrives. Do your homework now by getting some fun activities on the calendar and these rising hormones will thank you by triggering a wonderful rush of pleasure-inducing brain chemicals for you to enjoy every time you think of the great time you have to look forward to!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone-cast: High estrogen and testosterone may be amping up feel-good chemicals in your brain, but that doesn’t mean you’re going to be turned into a Teflon-coated Stepford wife with all of life’s annoyances bouncing off your smiling exterior. Truth is, these high hormones are making you more likely to go all Jerry Springer on someone if they irritate you. That’s because they’re amping up your confidence, comfort with taking risks and general chattiness, a mix that can make anyone cringe once you open your mouth and start telling them exactly what’s making them bother you.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone-cast: You may notice it’s harder to remember little details today. Blame goes to rising progesterone, a hormone that fogs up your brain a wee bit. Luckily, there’s an easy way to sharpen recall any day of your cycle: nibble dark chocolate. A recent British study show that the flavanols it contains triggers a surge of blood to the brain’s memory centers, making them work harder so you remember more for up to three hours after enjoying the sweet treat!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone-cast: While your energy may be on the downswing as estrogen and testosterone plunge, coffee, cola and tea aren’t the best choices for reigniting your pep. Studies show that caffeine can make a bad PMS mood so much worse by triggering bursts of noradrenaline, a hormone that gives you the same heart-pounding feeling you get when someone suddenly cuts you off in traffic. Opt for natural energy boosters instead, like a refreshing walk outside, a few jumping jacks or stealing peeks at that cutie you’ve been crushing on for months.
