Today’s hormonescope: You may be more concerned with getting the lowest price on a purchase today since lower levels of estrogen and testosterone are making you feel less confident about your finances. If you’re buying a product where you get to negotiate the price, like a car or a coffee table off of Craigslist, try getting the person you want a lower price from to sit on something cushy, like a couch or soft chair, then ask her or him to cut you a sweeter deal. Researchers from Yale, Harvard, and the MIT recently discovered that folks who sit on soft surfaces are far more willing to negotiate than those seated on hard ones! The link? As infants, physical sensations—for instance, hard and soft—are among the first feelings we develop and they become key to how we view the world and people around us, says study co-author John A. Bargh, Ph.D. For proof, just look at the way most of us use physical details to describe others: kind people are “softies” while stubborn people are “tough as nails”!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: During this premenstrual week, it may be harder to keep your cool in stress-filled situations—for instance, when stuck in traffic, battling store crowds during a big sale or dealing with a difficult co-worker—as plunging estrogen lowers your brain’s level of mood-regulating serotonin. Now the good news: Researchers just discovered a surprising way to avoid blowing your top—sip lemonade, sweet tea, a slushie, cola or another beverage that contains sugar a few minutes before you know a tense event will happen. In a new study, volunteers who drank a sugary beverage before being deliberately provoked by experimenters remained calmer than those who drank a beverage containing an artificial sweetener, reports the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Turns out, sugar strengthens areas of the brain that curb impulsive behavior so you’re less likely to lose your temper!
