My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Connect with pals for lunch dates, pot luck dinners or group outings to the mall. Rising estrogen is putting you in an extroverted, sociable kind of mood, so staying home alone feels like a total bore.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Watch those nervous tics, like nail chewing, hair twirling, lip biting or scratching. High estrogen is amping up your nervous energy, which can put nervous habits into overdrive, leaving you with nubby nails, scraggly hair ends, sore lips and scars. Having trouble getting that excess anxiety under control? Try sipping chamomile tea, which is abundant in calming compounds, research shows.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: A funny thing happens to your talking abilities today: you’ll likely find it harder to remember the exact word you want to use and in its place use the totally wrong one instead; it may feel like your tongue is tied in knots as you stumble trying to get out even simple words; and you may have more “ums” and “uhs” in between words as you talk. Blame for the verbal smackdown goes directly to rising progesterone, which has been shown to impair memory and verbal ability. Have an important meeting or phone call today and need to make the best impression? Try slowing down and thinking more about what you want to say before you say it. Research shows slow talking and pausing makes you appear smarter and more confident in what you’re saying.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: As estrogen plunges, taking down your patience, you may get so fed up with work, school, the guy you’re dating or even just the usual place you pick up lunch that you may decide you want to try something altogether different, for instance, ditch your accounting job to open up a video arcade, switch from majoring in social work to advertising and marketing, set up a Match.com account to see who bites or grab a friend and head to the new Mexican Thai fusion cafe you’ve heard so many people raving about.
