My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If you’ve been wanting to make a change in habits, say, quitting smoking, eating healthier or launching a new exercise regimen, aim to start it during the second half of your Week 1. This is when the fatiguing, achy parts of your period are past you and rising estrogen is boosting your mood, energy, resolve and perseverance, so it’s easier to make a major switch. Bonus: Compared to the second half of your cycle, this rising hormone is also reducing nicotine withdrawal symptoms, food cravings and your sensitivity to pain, making these three particular goals even easier to reach when you start going for them now!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Whether you’d given up on love or are a die-hard romantic, chances are, thoughts are going to turn to finding or re-connecting with someone special today. That’s high estrogen and testosterone’s influence. As these hormone soar toward their peak levels, they rev your desire for intimacy and passion.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 3, expect a little irritability. That’s due to plunging estrogen. Not a lot of women are aware that this hormone drops not once, but twice, every month. This first dip occurs right after ovulation and spurs what I call a “pre-PMS” state–which is like regular PMS, only shorter and less intense. The good news: By the middle of your Week 3, estrogen rises again, nixing the irritability. However, since sedating progesterone is rising along with it, you won’t experience the energy boost and sharp brain skills you enjoyed as estrogen rose in the first half of your cycle. Instead, you’ll experience a mellow calm or, if you’re sensitive to progesterone, a bit of weepiness or the blues.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: In Week 2 of your cycle, high estrogen made you enjoy scents and flavors that were new, bold or intense. Now that you’re in your premenstrual Week 4, plunging estrogen has the opposite effect: You may find new, bold or intense aromas and foods unpleasant or too powerful. So, keep this in mind when shopping for scented items or when picking foods to eat today.
