First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Everything naughty seems so much more fun today, like gossiping, taking a longer than allowed lunch or playing a practical joke on a friend. That’s because rising estrogen is helping your brain churn out lots of mood-elevating endorphins that have you putting an emphasis on fun and making silliness feel even more enjoyable!
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Good luck thinking about anything other than sex today. Chances are, you don’t even make it past the word “sex” in that last sentence! But, if you do, the cause of your raging libido is high testosterone, which remains elevated all throughout Week 2 as your body prepares for ovulation. A great bonus: Testosterone also makes orgasms easier to achieve and makes them more powerful than during any other week of your cycle! Not feeling the lusty rush? Then it’s a red flag that something’s blocking your sex drive, such as stress, fatigue or bad feelings about your partner. Get past those roadblocks and you’ll be enjoying all those tingly sensations like you should!
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Wave buh-bye to your libido. Ditto with raging orgasms. Unlike Week 2 gals, your sex drive and ability to orgasm are in the dumps. The problem? Lower levels of testosterone (boo!) and rising progesterone, which quashes whatever libido- and climax-enhancing effects testosterone had left (double-boo!). The good news? Caresses, hand-holding, massage and other gentle touch still feel all-over awesome. And, thankfully, your sex drive and ease of orgasm return during Week 4, so there’s a lot to look forward to!
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You might want to step away from the full-length mirror. Plunging estrogen is bringing down the confidence you have in your appearance, making you pretty sure someone swapped your usual mirror with one straight from a funhouse. (This advice goes double with those awful magnifying makeup mirrors. And triple for any mirror in a department store dressing room!) Want an easy way to feel great about your body? Try going for a walk! University of Florida researchers found that doing as few as 10 minutes of brisk walking, bike riding, swimming or other exercise three days per week makes your confidence about your body soar even if you don’t lose an ounce. Chalk it up to a curious brain quirk: Even just little exercise makes you feel like you look fitter, which instantly ups your self-image!
