My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Take out all those dog-eared pages of crafts magazines and open up all your saved craft web pages for cool projects you bookmarked to do one day. Rising estrogen is putting you in the mood for silly fun and it’s making you more likely to go easy on yourself if you don’t master the project perfectly.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: High estrogen and testosterone are making you feel more independent than any other week of your cycle. As a result, you’re more likely to spearhead projects, head to a restaurant on your own if no one’s available to join you or go it alone to a singles event even if your friends chicken out!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Sad news or negative events may make you weepier or more upset today than you would have been about it during the first half of your cycle. Why? Lower levels of estrogen and rising progesterone are amping up your emotional side and making your more likely to empathize with others.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Week 4 presents a predicament: Your libido is rising due to nerve endings down below getting stimulated in preparation for menstruation. However, plunging estrogen is making you self-conscious about your appearance. Result? You may be tempted to turn to an ex for sex just to avoid that whole first-time-naked thing. A good idea? Probably not. So, make sure parameters are clear from the beginning and you limit post-coital cuddling, which only increases the bonding hormone oxytocin, making you convinced you’re falling for the one you (probably rightly) kicked to the curb once already.
