Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 1, low-but-rising estrogen coupled with energy-depleting menstruation may have you wanting to continue soothing yourself the way you did in your premenstrual Week 4, for instance, by indulging in cake, chips and other “naughty” foods, cocooning on the couch and watching TV or buying yourself little items, like nail polish or a video games, that you don’t need but that perk up your mood. However, by the time estrogen reaches a higher level in the second half of your Week 2, you’ll likely feel a whoosh of energy, confidence and vitality that make you want to plunge head-first into your life, projects, relationships and/or work, leaving all those soothing behaviors behind.
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Experiment with something new, Week 2 gal! Change your hair, try a different makeup technique, review the foods you eat, alter your workout routine or sign up for an acting class to learn a new skill. High estrogen and testosterone are not only helping you keep an open mind about doing something a different way, they’re also prompting your brain to churn out more feel-good brain chemicals when you try something new, boosting your mood. And, in the off chance the new experience doesn’t work out, these high hormones are also making it easier to laugh off the experience and move on.
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: If it’s the first half of your Week 3, try to keep in mind that you’re more prone to irritation and anger due to plunging estrogen and testosterone. So, avoid stress triggers (when you can), ramp down your intake of caffeine (which worsens plunging hormone irritability) and have calming stress soothers at hand when you need them (such as chamomile tea or your favorite music). If it’s the second half of your Week 3, try to keep in mind although rising estrogen is taking the edge off your anger, rising progesterone could make you a little blue, weepy or sentimental depending on your sensitivity to it. So, avoid sad mood triggers (for instance, the evening news), ramp down your intake of alcohol (which is a depressant that worsens down moods) and have uplifting mood lifters at hand when you need them (such as your favorite sit-com on the DVR or calling a funny pal who always makes you laugh).
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: With plunging estrogen making you a tad introspective and making you more prone to dwell on regrets, the end of another month (how did it get here so fast?) could be a reminder to you of all the projects you’ve been meaning to get completed in 2013 that you haven’t even started yet, healthy resolutions you promised yourself and already broke or fun you planned to have/friends you’ve been meaning to see/vacations you’ve been wanting to take, but haven’t. My advice? To avoid spiraling into a vortex of head-slapping self-recrimination, use today to take one step toward one to-do you really want to-done, be it making a phone call or doing research online. You’ll feel better and, hey, it could be just the tiny push you need to put the wheels in motion to make your goal a reality.
