My HormonologyWhich week are you on
in your monthy cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your day has in store:

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: As this week progresses, you’ll notice that your mental and physical energy are increasing with every day. Thanks go to estrogen and testosterone, which sharpen brain skills and fill you with pep as they rise. Better yet, you’ll enjoy these brain and body boosts all the way through the end of Week 2!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Falling asleep may be difficult tonight as high estrogen has your brain buzzing with a million different thoughts all at once. The good news is that once you do nod finally off, you should be doing less tossing and turning thanks to the same hormone, which helps you reach deeper, more restorative phases of sleep as it rises.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Did you check out the Hormone Horoscope for Week 1? Well, the opposite thing happens to you. As this week progresses, you’ll notice your mental and physical energy wane. Blame goes to lower levels of estrogen and testosterone coupled with rising progesterone, a sedating hormone that slows you down.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: During this premenstrual week, it may be harder to keep your cool in stress-filled situations—for instance, when stuck in traffic, battling store crowds during a big sale or dealing with a difficult co-worker—as plunging estrogen lowers your brain’s level of mood-regulating serotonin. Now the good news: Researchers just discovered a surprising way to avoid blowing your top—sip lemonade, sweet tea, a slushie, cola or another beverage that contains sugar a few minutes before you know a tense event will happen. In a new study, volunteers who drank a sugary beverage before being deliberately provoked by experimenters remained calmer than those who drank a beverage containing an artificial sweetener, reports the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Turns out, sugar strengthens areas of the brain that curb impulsive behavior so you’re less likely to lose your temper!
