My HormonologyWhich week are you on
in your monthy cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your day has in store:

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: As estrogen revs up your urge do more, but bored with the to-dos already on your list, you may get the urge to organize something new—like a neighborhood crime watch, a knitting group, a closet system that makes it easier to find the clothes you need or a kitchen system that makes it simpler for you to cook.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You may find it difficult to fall asleep tonight as high estrogen and testosterone make your thoughts race and have you pondering just about everything. If you need extra help nodding off, try counting your blessings or focusing on your breath. But other study-proven methods to help you calm your mind and body so you can finally get some zzzs.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Can’t resist a little sugar today as rising progesterone amps up your cravings for sweets? Well, here’s one benefit of indulging in cake, chocolate, ice cream or other sweet delights: sugar helps you make better decisions! In a new University of South Dakota study, volunteers who drank a sweetened soda made decisions that had more favorable outcomes than those who drank a diet soda, reports the journal Psychological Science. The brain uses sugar as fuel, so a higher level of sugar right before making a big decision—such as whether to go for a new job or move to a new city—gives us more energy to think of the big picture and future consequences, which leads us to make the better decision, the researchers conclude.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You may feel like no outfit fits right, you’re bloating like a puffer fish and you just can’t win with your hair. Are you suddenly falling apart at the seams? No. You’re just experiencing a drop in self-esteem from plunging estrogen and testosterone, which make it soooo much easier to see your faults and way less easy to see your positive qualities. To feel better about yourself, first avoid department store dressing room mirrors like the plague (seriously, don’t stores realize how awful the lighting is in there?), then don an outfit and wear a hairstyle that you feel most comfortable in, which will make you less self-conscious about your appearance.
