Daily Hormone Horoscope: Thursday, October 14, 2010

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You may find that you’re driving a bit faster, the radio is just a smidge (or two or three) louder than in past weeks, you need to convince someone that your method is the best and you’re saying “yes” more often to invitations, inquiries and virtually anything asked. Why? Rising estrogen and testosterone are pumping your brain full of feel-good chemicals, and this makes you a tad more zealous in everything you do.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Watch your wallet! High estrogen and testosterone are making you more likely to splurge on high-priced items, like a flat-screen TV, designer shoes or a new car. That’s because high estrogen makes you more easily excited by new purchases and is making you feel overly optimistic that you can find a way to pay the bill somehow and high testosterone is making you more impulsive, so you’re less likely to spend time weighing the pros and cons.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: As estrogen reaches lower levels and subdued progesterone rises, you may be feeling a twinge of regret over antics Week 2 You pulled last week, like blowing your diet by eating an entire quart of ice cream (and not even the low-fat kind), getting wasted at your lil’ sister’s birthday party or throwing away half your wardrobe because you thought your clothes made you look boring. In retrospect, as progesterone makes you a bit more serious, it can be hard to fathom why you were so impulsive.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Women are more prone to ruminating than men, research shows. Unlike many guys who have the charming ability to turn their emotions on and off like a light switch, we tend to churn over issues, problems, insults and irritations in our minds till we drive ourselves crazy. I bring this up because, as estrogen nosedives this week, you’ll be more inclined to torture yourself with ruminations about issues big and small. Luckily, there’s a pretty simple way to get out of your own head and stop the revolving-door thought process: distract yourself. Studies shows that going to the movies, shopping, dancing or doing anything else that pretty much stops you from thinking slams the brakes on ruminating so you can let go of the issue and destress.
