My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen and testosterone rise

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re open to experimenting today as rising estrogen piques your curiosity. But, this hormone may not climb high enough to push you into trying something completely different. So, you’ll likely be happiest with new twists on old themes, for instance, switching the kind of syrup you pour on your waffles or trying a different flavor of your favorite lip gloss brand!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: High optimism from peaking estrogen may lead you to keep things around that perhaps should be cast aside, for instance, you may keep a piece of furniture that broke because you’re sure you can fix it, keep a lousy roommate because you’re sure one day she’ll pay her share of the rent or a keep an aggravating job because you’re sure it will someday get better.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then rise again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You’re likely turning down the volume on your iPod, driving more slowly, avoiding sketchy areas and not eating in diners that don’t get an A rating from the Health Department. The reason? As progesterone rises this week, it makes you prefer quiet, safe experiences over loud, exciting ones.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: While energy is on the low side due to plunging estrogen, truth is, you’re probably not feeling as lethargic as you were during your Week 3. That’s because your body’s level of progesterone (a seriously sedating hormone) that rose all last week is now decreasing all this week. That said, if you do need extra pep to make it through your day, try to avoid overdoing it on caffeine, which can trigger premenstrual irritability. Instead, go for an invigorating walk outside, listen to up-tempo music or nibble a little dark chocolate, which sends energizing blood to the brain.
