Which week are you on in your cycle?
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: On some days, things just seem harder and on other days some things seems easier. Of course, we’re more apt to notice the days when things are harder since, well, we’re using a lot more swear words to vent our frustration, making it pretty obvious. So, I just want to give you a heads up that things may be a bit easier today as rising estrogen and testosterone boost your mood, energy and dexterity. And that way you can appreciate all those times when a car door didn’t slam your fingers or a coworker didn’t passive-aggressively insult your project or a partner didn’t forget to bring home dinner.
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: High testosterone is making you more impulsive than any other week of your cycle, which means you’re likely to splurge on sooo many things you don’t need. But, if you’re also trying to curb spending so you can squirrel away cash for a bigger goal, for instance, a dream vacation or your wedding, there’s an easy way to counter your impulsiveness: Whenever you get the urge to spend money on something unnecessary, mentally time travel to the moment when you’ve reached your dream goal and picture as many details as you can—like seashells dotting the beach or your wedding dress. In a new fMRI study, scientists at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany found that volunteers who pictured lots of details of a long-range goal activated an area of the brain that triggers patience and quashes the urge for instant gratification. Result: It’s easy to curb spending and save your money for the large goal you really want!
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: If you’re feeling blue or weepy for no reason, it may be progesterone’s fault. When this hormone rises, like it does today, it can cause a down mood in women who are sensitive to it. Other less sensitive gals will feel a general sense of calm. Regardless of your hormone sensitivity, you can perk up your mood by doing activities that increase feel-good brain chemicals, such as hanging out with a friend, exercising and enjoying your favorite hobby.
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Plunging estrogen lowers your brain’s level of feel-good chemicals, making you less confident and more likely to worry.
