My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You’re more likely to go with the flow and accept unexpected changes—like bad weather impeding your commute or a surprise visitor showing up. Credit goes to rising estrogen and testosterone, which amp up your mood, makjng you more flexible, and your ability to think faster so you can come up with creative ways to adapt to the new circumstances.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Studies show that this is the week of your cycle when you’re most likely to stray from your mate, or at least do a little flirting and fantasizing. Why? High testosterone is amping up your sex drive to record levels and high estrogen is putting you on the lookout for a sexual partner who’s strong, healthy and virile.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Here’s what confuses sweethearts and people who you’ve met during the first two weeks of your cycle: Just last week you were chatty, high-energy, adventurous and flirtatious. So, when you suddenly clam up, slow down, play it safe and turn it off, they can’t understand what’s behind the change. You can try explaining to them that rising progesterone and lower levels of estrogen and testosterone affect brain chemicals that manage mood, energy, confidence and libido. And if that doesn’t work, tell them you’re just hungry and invite them join you in a delicious meal of homey goodies that progesterone has you craving—like fried chicken and biscuits, meatloaf and pot pie.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Let go of your need to be a perfectionist today. Plunging estrogen is giving you a short fuse. Plus, it’s taking the shine off your focus and memory and making you less coordinated. Not a great combination if you’re trying to do your absolute best on difficult projects, like cake decorating or desk building (seriously, how do the manufacturers fit so many pieces into one tiny box?). Cutting yourself a little slack by expecting the icing to be a little messy or the desk drawer to be a little crooked will help you get through the task with less irritation.
