Today’s Daily Hormone Horoscope: Thursday, August 5, 2010

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Haul out your favorite scented stuff—like bath bombs, moisturizers, perfume, candles and incense. Rising estrogen is making you enjoy aromas of all sorts today.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You’ll be wearing a bit more makeup, taking a few extra minutes to get your hair just right and picking out one of your favorite outfits to wear. What’s behind the urge to get gussied up? Estrogen! When it gets as high as it does today, it makes you want to amp up your sex appeal.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Remind yourself to perk up your response to jokes by your boss, offers of a promotion, surprise gifts, requests for your hand in marriage and other events that require you to show excitement. Today’s rising progesterone makes you far more sedate and serene and less likely to bubble over with enthusiasm.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You may be feeling self-conscious about what you say today as estrogen and testosterone plunge, decreasing your confidence. Luckily, there’s an easy trick that not only makes others more likely to agree with what you say, but it also makes you more confident about your opinions. What is it? Simply nod your head as you speak! According to a study out of Ohio State University, nodding as you talk boosts your self-confidence in your own thoughts. Meanwhile, shaking your head does the opposite: it makes you doubt yourself!
