My HormonologyWhich week are you on
in your monthy cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your day has in store:

It’s Halloween today in the United States and other spooky parts of the world, which means it’s a time to dress up in costume and cram in as much sugar as you can before your next dentist appointment. For the special occasion, I thought it would be fun to describe what kind of costumes would best describe the week you’re in! Here’s what you would dress up as for…

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s spookyscope: Week 1 would dress up as a hippie, cartoon character or smiley face. The reason? Rising estrogen and testosterone are lifting your spirits (even if you have your period–take that, menstrual myth!) and putting you in the mood to have fun!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s spookyscope: Week 2 would dress up as a go-go dancer, stunt pilot or Tasmanian Devil. That’s because this week’s peaking estrogen and testosterone are amping up your libido, sense of adventure and energy to cycle-long highs!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Week 3 would dress up as a chocolate chip cookie, potato chip, pillow or sleeping pill. Sense a theme? Rising progesterone is making you both hungry and sleepy, so food and napping are pretty much fighting for first place on your craving list right now.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Week 4 would dress up as a merry-go-round, bomb with a lit fuse or princess. You can probably guess why, but I’ll explain anyway: This week’s plunging estrogen creates changes in certain mood-regulating brain chemicals, which makes you more likely to have mood swings, lose your patience leading you to fly off the handle at relatively minor offenses and insist on being treated like royalty–or at least given control over the TV remote.
