My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You may take more of an interest in gossip of all sorts today, including celebrity news, juicy tidbits about your coworkers and what’s going on with your neighbors down the street. That’s because rising estrogen is amping up your desire to find out news about others and it’s pumping up brain chemicals that give you a thrill when you hear something saucy!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Today’s high testosterone makes you waaaayyy more impulsive than any other week of your cycle, so you may drop a huge wad of cash on a pricey item or sign up for a sky-diving class as a spur-of-the-moment decision. And now a study in the journal Psychological Science reveals that you’re even more likely to act on your whims if you visit or even simply pass by a fast food restaurant! The reason? Fast food amps up your desire for immediate gratification in all aspects of your life, making you prefer products and services that save you time even if they cost a bundle!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: You may suddenly feel worry over money, your job, paying your bills, affording gift-giving for the holidays or other financial matters. Why? During the first half of your cycle, rising estrogen was lifting feel-good brain chemicals that helped you minimize money woes or avoid paying attention to them altogether. However, in Week 3 this hormone gets lower, making money matters harder to ignore. Meanwhile, rising progesterone makes you focus on important issues in your life, which for most of us boils down to what’s in our wallet. To avoid spiraling into an anxiety attack over your finances, try finding easy ways to cut corners, including calling cable and phone companies to find out about cheaper plans, upping your deductible on car, home and health insurance policies and doing a little creative holiday shopping on Craiglist.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Trust your instincts today! Whether or not you realize it, plunging estrogen is making you more aware of your surroundings and what people are saying. So, when a salesperson proclaims “It’s the last one!” so you should buy it right now or a friend says he’ll totally pay back the money he needs to borrow to start a composting business, pay close attention to any nagging feeling you get in your gut. It’s really your subconscious sending you information it’s picked up on that will help you make the right decision.
