Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: With people-shmoozing estrogen rising today, you’re happiest when reconnecting with friends and family you didn’t see over the weekend. This hormone is also making you chatty so you’ll probably want to block out time for a long, long, long lunch to catch up on all the latest news and gossip!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Your high estrogen- and testosterone-fueled optimism may get you in trouble today. For instance, you could feel like you have more time than you really do to meet a deadline so you procrastinate, you may accept an invite to a party you’re hoping will be awesome but will probably be lame or you eat a dozen doughnuts and tell yourself you’ll work them all off at the gym the next day.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: It’s not in your head—you really are hungrier today. That’s progesterone’s fault. As it rises, it amps up your appetite and makes you hungry between meals. What’s more, progesterone is making you want to order ooey, gooey comfort foods and practically anything packed with calories. That’s because this hormone wants you to start eating for two in case you got pregnant during ovulation this month (your body won’t get the memo about whether or not you really got pregnant till Week 4). If you’re trying to watch your waistline, try filling up on fruits and salads and indulging in smaller portions of your favorite comfort foods so you can fulfill your cravings without going overboard.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Week 4 presents a predicament: Your libido is rising due to nerve endings down below getting stimulated in preparation for menstruation. However, plunging estrogen is making you self-conscious about your appearance. Result? You may be tempted to turn to an ex for sex just to avoid that whole first-time-naked thing. A good idea? Probably not. So, make sure parameters are clear from the beginning and you limit post-coital cuddling, which only increases the bonding hormone oxytocin, making you convinced you’re falling for the one you (probably rightly) kicked to the curb once already.
