First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone horoscope: In the second half of your cycle, you were cautious about your spending, worried about making bill payments on time and less likely to splurge. The first half is a whole other story. As estrogen and testosterone rise during Week 1 and Week 2, you become more impulsive, less worried about your financial picture and more susceptible to sales tactics used in ads and in person. The easy solution to keeping your money in check? Give yourself a 24-hour cooling off period before making major purchases to be sure you really need or even still want the item you were so ga-ga about. And keep track of your bill due dates on your calendar so you don’t get socked with hefty late fees, which can also ding your credit score!
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone horoscope: Feeding your senses become more important to you this week as high estrogen sharpens your taste, touch, hearing, sight and smell. As a result, you may want to pick up products and feel them before you purchase them, use bold-scented candles, incense or potpourri in your home or redecorate your workspace so that simply looking at it makes you feel calm, energized or inspired!
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone horoscope: Week 3 can be a pretty tricky week mood-wise: If it’s the first half of your Week 3, you may feel cranky and blue due to what I call “pre-PMS”, a phase where estrogen and testosterone dip for the first of two times in your monthly cycle, triggering symptoms similar to regular PMS, only shorter and less intense. (By Week 4, estrogen and testosterone dip for the second time in your cycle, triggering true PMS.) If it’s the second half of your Week 3, estrogen and testosterone rise along with progesterone, making you feel mellow and calm. Unless you’re sensitive to progesterone, in which case you may feel a bit weepy. But, the irritation should be gone, so that’s something to enjoy!
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone horoscope: TV shows you love, books you’ve read over and over and snacks you’ve eaten for years will feel like old friends today as plunging hormones have you craving familiar things that make you feel comforted. Research shows that surrounding yourself with old favorites helps you overcome the down moods and discomfort that can bother you during your premenstrual week.
