Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormone horoscope: Throughout your life, a lot of people will try to convince you that your Week 1, which is when your period starts, is the worst week ever. Truth? It’s totally awesome. Want proof? A few hours after your period starts, estrogen and testosterone start to rise. First off, this means an end to PMS moodiness, irritability and other annoying premenstrual symptoms. (Yay!) What’s more, the higher these two hormones climb over this week, the better things get for you: Your mood lifts, your memory sharpens, you’re more eloquent as you speak, you shed water weight, you’re more confident and, once you get halfway through this week, you’re more energetic. So, why does your period week get such a bum rap? Blame goes to painful cramps, which can sour your mood, plus fatigue that comes from still-low hormones combined with your body losing energizing iron during bleeding. Luckily, once you relieve the cramps with a pain pill, heat patch or chamomile tea and restore your pep by eating iron-rich foods (like beans and spinach) or taking a supplement, you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits that come with glorious Week 1!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone horoscope: If you thought Week 1 was awesome, you are just gonna love Week 2! All those rising hormone hit their peaks this week, giving you the potential to have the best mood, energy, sex and fun all cycle long! There is one caveat, however: High estrogen can intensify and prolong a stress response so something like, say, a test or job interview, which can trigger a stomach-churning, sweat-inducing stress-out. One way to deal with it: Try to stay positive and turn the stress into confidence-pumping excitement (for instance, by cheerleading yourself with uplifting self-talk, as in, “I’ll ace the test!” or “I’m perfect for the job—they’ll love me!”) that spurs you on to do even better!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone horoscope: Your credit cards get a breather today as plunging estrogen and testosterone curb impulsive and high-ticket spending. Unless, however, you see a cute pillow, yummy-smelling candle, perfect picture frame or another item that will spruce up your home. Then rising progesterone, which amps up your urge to feather the nest, will be prodding you to totally splurge!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormone horoscope: Quality sleep will be hard to come by tonight due to plunging estrogen, which depletes your brain of sleep-regulating serotonin. As a result, you may find it hard to fall asleep, wake up easily or simply toss and turn without getting any deep zzzs. To up your chances of better sleep, try keeping your bedroom cool, wear comfy pajamas and warn roommates, family members and pets to keep the noise down since plunging estrogen makes you more sensitive to sleep-robbing discomfort and sounds.
