My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: Forcing a Week 1 gal to go to work or school or return to the weekday grind is almost cruel. Rising estrogen is making you want to play hooky, have fun and do practically anything other than work or chores. To pump up your motivation to tackle your to-dos, try thinking of all the fun parts of your day, such as chatting with folks you like, flirting with hotties you lust and eating your favorite lunch or treats.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You can kiss your budget goodbye today. High estrogen and testosterone are giving you the urge to splurge and making it hard to resist a great sale, amazing find or indulgent self-gift.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: You may be giving a second thought to a plan or idea you had last week and possibly thinking about nixing what you started. Why? Estrogen and testosterone dip, which lowers your confidence and motivation, and progesterone is rising, which is urging you to play it safe.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You’ll probably be drawn toward sweet, salty and fatty foods today. The reason? As estrogen and testosterone plunge, they bring down feel-good brain chemicals that are responsible for boosting mood. And food that’s loaded in salt, sugar and fat actually bumps these brain chemicals back up, giving you a temporary emotional lift.
