My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: On some days, things just seem harder and on other days some things seems easier. Of course, we’re more apt to notice the days when things are harder since, well, we’re using a lot more swear words to vent our frustration, making it pretty obvious. So, I just want to give you a heads up that things may be a bit easier today as rising estrogen and testosterone boost your mood, energy and dexterity. And that way you can appreciate all those times when a car door didn’t slam your fingers or a coworker didn’t passive-aggressively insult your project or a partner didn’t forget to bring home dinner.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You’re more easily bored today as high estrogen and testosterone try to persuade you to have some fun and switch things up a bit. As a result, you may opt to skip your favorite Monday night TV shows to see a live band or pop in on friends unexpectedly, call a hottie you’ve been meaning to ask out or try your luck at stumbling across a celebrity on chatroulette.com!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: I can’t stress this enough: today, rising progesterone is making you appear more subdued to other people. This is especially important to note if you’re on a job interview, being offered a gift or being proposed to since you’re going to have to work harder at showing your enthusiasm and not simply do your happy dance on the inside.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: You may be feeling self-conscious about what you say today as estrogen and testosterone plunge, decreasing your confidence. Luckily, there’s an easy trick that not only makes others more likely to agree with what you say, it also makes you more self-assured about your opinions, too: Simply nod your head as you speak. According to a study out of Ohio State University, nodding as you talk boosts your self-confidence in your own thoughts. Meanwhile, shaking your head does the opposite: it makes you doubt yourself!
