Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You’re more willing to drop a grudge you’d been holding onto against a friend, restaurant, store, coworker or someone else who irritated you. Folks who wronged you can thank estrogen for the free pass. As this hormone rises, it makes you more optimistic that things can turn out better than the last time, making you open to giving them a second chance.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: You’ll likely be going out of your way to add some excitement to your day, such as eating spicier foods than you normally do, driving faster than the speed limit, flirting with a total stranger or spending way more money than you should. The reason? Estrogen and testosterone reach their highest levels this week, and these hormones are making your brain buzz with even more with feel-good chemicals when you do something a little naughty, unusual or out of character!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: It could be hard to muster motivation to work, clean, cook or do the simplest tasks today. Blame goes squarely on rising progesterone, which saps your pep and makes it nearly impossible to get up off the couch once you’ve sat down.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: For me, my worst premenstrual day is Day 23, the first day of PMS, when virtually anything can set me off into a vocal chord-snapping screamfest that deafens all within a 10-foot radius (not that I’m bragging). After that, my irritability kind of subsides and maybe rears its head a couple of times, but less intensely, till the end of my cycle. I bring this up because, for you, your worst PMS day may be another day of Week 4,  irritability and the blues may rise and fall throughout the week or, if you’re one of the lucky ones, you may have no moodiness at all. My point is that PMS is not a one-size-fits-all experience, but it is a time to be aware that plunging estrogen has the potential to bring down good feelings and make you lose your cool.
