Today’s Daily Hormone Horoscope: Friday, May 31, 2013

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Once the achy, tiring parts of your period are past, you (and probably many others) will notice that your sense of humor comes roaring back. That’s because as estrogen rises, it pumps up feel-good brain chemicals that bring out your funny-bone. In fact, compared to your relatively humor-free premenstrual Week 4, some folks might assume something big happened in your life to put you in such a jocular mood, such as winning a scratch-off lottery ticket or finding out you’re getting a big, fat raise. Oh, you could tell them that it’s just rising estrogen doing its mood-lifting job. But, it’s much more fun to keep them guessing.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 (or ovulation)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: I often think that there are two distinct halves to our monthly hormone cycles: During the first half, our hormones have us reaching out into the world around us, for instance, buying more things, connecting with more people, being more curious about learning something new, finding out the latest news and gossip, talking more, creating more and traveling to more places. Believe it or not, it’s all because our hormones are trying to set us on a course toward finding a mate in time for ovulation at the end of Week 2. Once Week 3 arrives and our fertile window closes, our hormones during the second half of our cycle have us turning our attention inward and retreating from the world, for instance, we’re buying fewer things, preferring alone-time or time with just a few buds, we’re more interested in examining our own thoughts, feelings and actions, we tend to stick to things, people and places we know well and we’re quieter. That’s because our hormones are trying to keep us protected in case our egg did, indeed, get fertilized during ovulation. Why do I bring this up? Because Week 2 is when all these extroverted, productive, energetic feelings reach their peak. So, try to take advantage of them now (for instance, by signing up for a fun class, attending a singles event, taking an exciting trip or running a marathon) before that Week 3 change arrives and you’ll be retreating inward again.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: When making weekend plans, keep in mind that you’re typically happiest in your Week 3 when spending time with friends you know well, doing low-key activities that don’t require much physical exertion and always remaining within arms’ reach of yummy comfort food. That’s because lower levels of estrogen and testosterone combined with rising progesterone are making you enjoy bonding with close pals, they’re triggering a dip in energy and they’re causing cravings for carb-rich, fatty, salty and/or sweet treats you love.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: As I just furiously paced up and down my street, screaming and waving a broken solar-powered address sign that certain neighborhood kids broke yet again on their way to the bus stop, I’m reminded of a Week 4 tip to share: When something or someone really ticks you off today, quickly try to find someone with a cooler head to stop you from immediately retaliating. Plunging estrogen is like the match that lights the fuse that makes the bomb go boom. That’s because it’s heightening your anger and making you prone to plotting a revenge attack that can be out of proportion to the issue bothering you. In my case, a level-headed neighbor happened to be coming out of her house and talked sense into me. But, my husband (wisely) wasn’t far behind either.
