My HormonologyWhich week are you on
in your monthly cycle?
Find out what it reveals about
what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen and testosterone rise

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: You may find it irresistible to join in a gossipfest or disclose a secret today. As estrogen rises, it makes you chatty, and as testosterone rises, it makes you impulsive, making it super-hard to keep a tight lip!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Falling asleep may be difficult tonight as high estrogen has your brain buzzing with a million different thoughts all at once. The good news is that once you do nod finally off, you should be doing less tossing and turning thanks to the same hormone, which helps you reach deeper, more restorative phases of sleep as it rises.

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then rise again

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Your credit cards get a breather today as rising progesterone and lower levels of estrogen and testosterone have you spending less than you did during the first two weeks of your cycle. The exception (isn’t there always an exception?) is when you spot throw pillows, picture frames, candles and other items  that can spruce up your personal space. Then rising progesterone, which brings out your urge to feather the nest, has you buying them in bulk!

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Estrogen, testosterone and progesterone plunge

Today’s Hormone Horoscope: During this premenstrual week, it may be harder to keep your cool in stress-filled situations—for instance, when stuck in traffic, battling store crowds during a big sale or dealing with a difficult co-worker—as plunging estrogen lowers your brain’s level of mood-regulating serotonin. Now the good news: Researchers just discovered a surprising way to avoid blowing your top—sip lemonade, sweet tea, a slushie, cola or another beverage that contains sugar a few minutes before you know a tense event will happen. In a new study, volunteers who drank a sugary beverage before being deliberately provoked by experimenters remained calmer than those who drank a beverage containing an artificial sweetener, reports the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. Turns out, sugar strengthens areas of the brain that curb impulsive behavior so you’re less likely to lose your temper!
