My Hormonology

Which week are you on in your cycle?

Week 1
First day of period to Day 7
Today’s hormonescope: You’re not in a wait-and-see kinda mood. Thanks to rising estrogen and testosterone—which make you impulsive, optimistic and motivated—once you get a plan, you want to act on it right away. Which in idea-rich Week 1 can mean the start of virtually anything—learning the cello, signing up for a pottery class or battering down a wall in your home to launch a renovation project!

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormonescope: Thanks to high estrogen and testosterone, your brain gets a bigger rush of feel-good chemicals whenever you do something new and slightly daring. So, find ways to treat yourself to more delicious thrills today, for instance, by going sledding on a big hill, flirting with your secret crush or tweeting your favorite celebrity on Twitter!

Week 3
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormonescope: Sedating progesterone is on the rise today and that’s limiting the amount of mental and physical energy you have. If you need a lot—for instance, for a project at work or school, a job interview or to pitch a new client—I recommend avoiding other mentally and physically fatiguing activities, such as organizing your closet, writing up a budget or even shopping. Once you blow whatever pep you’ve got, it’ll be extremely difficult to summon more to apply to anything else.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Today’s hormonescope: Given a choice between the tried-and-true and something new—for instance, when ordering dinner, picking a TV show or shopping for clothes—you’ll likelier be happier with the thing you’re used to. As estrogen plunges today, you become less open (and subsequently happy about) new experiences while old stand-bys give you comfort that, despite a zig-zaggy PMS mood, everything’s gonna be a-okay.
