Today’s hormone horoscope: As estrogen and testosterone rise this week, you’re going to feel lighter, happier and more carefree. However, this doesn’t mean you’re going to feel this way 100% of the time. Truth is, your hormone-inspired good mood is a general trend. But, it can be spoiled by any of the usual mood-crushers, like skipping meals, getting into a fender bender and watching your sweetie put the empty milk carton back in the fridge for the umpteenth time. The good news is that once you’re past these little bumps in the road, rising hormones promise to get you feeling cheery quickly once again!
Day 8 to Day 13
Today’s hormone horoscope: Be careful of biting off more than you can chew today with romance, work or money obligations. High estrogen and testosterone are whipping up your excitement and optimism, making you more likely to say “yes!” when perhaps you should say “maybe”. For instance, when a pal says knows a cutie she wants to set you up with on a blind date, ask about the person’s past relationship history first (no need to jump from the frying pan into the fire with someone who can’t sustain a relationship past three months, right?). Or if your co-worker asks you to help out with a project, think about your current (probably super-packed) schedule before agreeing to cram it with anything more. And when your roommate tries to convince you to go halfsies with her on a new flat-screen TV, think first about all the bills you’re still paying off…and the inevitable custody battle that ensues when roommates go halfsies on anything and then part ways.
Day 14 (or ovulation) to Day 22
Today’s hormone horoscope: Unlike Week 2 gals, you may be too cautious today as rising progesterone and lower levels of estrogen and testosterone urge you to play it safe. In your case, when you’re tempted to say “no way!”, think about saying “maybe” instead. For instance, if you see a posting for a job that pays great and is close to home, but is a little different from what you do now, consider sending in your resume anyway and use your cover letter to point out how your past experience would make you perfect for this new role. Or if you meet a cutie at a party and think he’s ho-hum, try him out on a date since he may be shy in a crowd, but open up when one-on-one. And if there’s a killer promotion at the car dealership that offers zero-percent interest for the life of the loan and no money down, instead of being scared off by the cost of a new car, consider that it may be worth trading in your old car whose warrantee has long expired for a new one that comes with a bumper-to-bumper warrantee since you’ll be saving on repair costs in the long run!
Day 23 to the end of your cycle
Today’s hormone horoscope: You’re more apt to let curse words fly today as plunging estrogen makes you quick to anger. Some good news? Swearing actually reduces pain! A study in the journal NeuroReport reveals that expletives trigger a surge of the stress hormone cortisol, which temporarily douses discomfort. And this propensity toward cursing couldn’t come at a better time since Week 4’s plunging estrogen makes you more sensitive to stubbed toes, sharp elbow jabs in crowds and other pain-inducers than during any other week of your cycle.
