HORMONE HOROSCOPE: Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Hormonology uses hundreds of scientific studies to show you how your hormones impact you in virtually every way every day of your monthly cycle. The Hormone Horoscope is a nifty little way of dispensing this information daily. To get started, find the week you’re on in your monthly cycle (you can use this easy guide if you’re not sure), then read your Hormone Horoscope for today!

My HormonologyWhich week are you on in your monthly cycle? Find out what it reveals about what your day has in store:

Week 1
Day 1 (first day of period) to Day 7
Estrogen rises
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: Careful of biting off more than you can chew today, Week 1 gal. Rising estrogen is making you more optimistic and outgoing, which means when you’re asked for a favor (like lending someone money or donating a lot of your time to a cause) or asked to take on a big responsibility (like watching someone’s pet iguana or spotting a fellow gym-goer who’s lifting a 500-pound barbell), you’re apt to say “yes” when perhaps you should be saying “maybe”. So, before you agree to anything that could potentially drain your wallet, crunch you for time or be a problem in other ways, try to think more carefully about the ramifications before jumping in.

Week 2
Day 8 to Day 14 or ovulation (here’s how to tell when you’re ovulating)
Estrogen and testosterone rise till they peak
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: When things tick you off today (and for sure something will), there is some good news to report: While you’ll get steamed and vent to pals and wish horrible things on whoever wronged you, high estrogen is making it easier for you to get over the issue faster than you would in other weeks of your cycle and it’s even making you likely to find a silver lining in whatever happened. That’s because this hormone is prompting your brain to churn out more mood-lifting chemicals, helping you feel more positive. And while that doesn’t make you totally immune to getting totally ticked off, it goes a long way toward overcoming it.

Week 3
Day 15 (or the day after ovulation) to Day 22
Progesterone rises; estrogen and testosterone drop for half the week, then estrogen rises again
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: In your Week 2, you were super-eloquent thanks to high estrogen. In your Week 3? Not so much. Not only is estrogen dipping to lower levels, you’re now also contending with rising progesterone–a hormone that dings your verbal ability. So, you may be throwing in a few more “ums” and “ahs” than usual while also forgetting the exact word you want to say. Have an important meeting or phone call today where you need stellar verbal skills? No problem! Simply take a moment to think about exactly what you’re going to say before you say it. Not only will this help combat progesterone’s verbal problems, research shows that slow talkers who pause actually appear more thoughtful and intelligent than speedier chatters.

Week 4
Day 23 to the end of cycle
Estrogen and progesterone plunge
Today’s Hormone Horoscope: With all the bumping into doorways, tripping over furniture and stumbling over sidewalk curbs you’re doing today, you may be convinced someone moved everything in the world one inch from where it used to be. It’s not a sneaky trick. It’s just descending estrogen making you slightly less coordinated, which can lead to a bit of clumsiness. And a lot of sore toes and shins.
